SimBoot Review

I have been lucky enough to procure a set of SimBoots from the founder of the company, Randall Johnson, thanks to the advertisement on ALMotorsports.com. The boots are hand produced by Randall himself to the exact size, color, and grip specifications that you order. The emphasis he places on the size provides an efficient, comfortable fit. There are a variety of color options that you can choose to create a unique design to fit any of your desires. You will also have the option to select patches of grip on the toe, heel, heel and toe, or no grip at all, depending on your driving style.

If you select heel and toe Randall makes sure to inform you about the negative effects that may come from the grip if you right foot brake, but do not use the heel and toe method. Throughout the process Randall was a class act who made sure that what you ordered is exactly what you desire. Due to the nature of my acquisition of the boots I ordered my pair with a black base color and a blue stripe, with grip for heel and toe, which matches our website design quite well.

Appearance

The SimBoots look professional, definitely not mediocre work. There are no lose threads and the area where the grip and cloth meet is neatly meshed with a band. The bands also have multiple lassos that have a string ran throughout the boot. The string is wrapped around and led to the back of the boot, and through a tightener. The tightener allows you to loosen or tighten the boot through various areas, providing some extra room for you to grow into for the future, without sacrificing a tight grip once you make the purchase.

Functionality

I use a G25 and any previous attempts I made to heel-and-toe were halted due to a discomfort to the right foot when trying to shift the heel from the brake to the throttle pedal. Socks were too thin to provide a enough cushioning, but shoes were so thick that getting a solid feel for the pedals was too difficult. With the SimBoot I can easily shift my heel from the brake to the throttle without feeling a sharp discomfort to the right side of my foot. The patches of grip also add an extra dimension to functionality. Now there is no worry about my foot slipping off of the pedal, as has frequently happened while applying pressure with socks on. The optionality of the location of the patches helps to provide a unique setup depending on your driving style. Randall also has the courtesy to warn about any difficulties that may appear due to the wrong combination of patches per your driving style. Right foot braking with heel and toe grip patches can cause ratcheting. With iRacing.com I have been running for a couple of hours now and I feel much more consistent. Not faster, but knowing that my foot won't slide off the pedal if I want to make a jab at the throttle or brake adds a ton of confidence. I left foot brake by nature, but I the grips that I selected means I won't have the ratcheting effect, but I also have the ability to learn to heel and toe.

Pricing

Obviously I didn't have to pay for my pair of SimBoots, but the $30 + shipping price is more than reasonable for the detail that is placed into each boot. Every order is hand made by Randall who will create your boot according to the exact specifications that you provide, from color to size. Randall will also keep your purchase information on file in case any mistakes are made, or if you would like to order a different size after a period of time.
